Why Don’t Resolutions Work?

New Years Resolutions - Happy New Years - Principles

Happy New Year everyone.

Typically this would be the time I’d talk about resolutions and offer some advice in regards to making them stick. However, over the last few months I’ve come to a realization.

We have traditionalized resolutions to the point of making them without any kind of commitment. This haphazard decision making leads to forgotten and abandoned resolutions just weeks, even days after making them.

To create change, visit the source of the given problem. To do otherwise, is to use quick fixes and putting bandages to hide the problem–not fix it.

Here is a brief list of places one might start:

Thoughts - Your thoughts are electric impulses which actually bring the things you think about into your life.

Habits - Are the things I do on a daily basis in all areas of my life fruitful and good?

Physical Surroundings - The people and things you surround yourself with affect your perspective on life, thoughts and therefore the vibrations YOU put out. Something as simple as keeping your apartment or office clean can make you feel better.

Vocation - Is your current place of work enjoyable or is it just a bi-monthly paycheck?

Proactivity - Are you actively participating in your life OR are you letting things happen by chance (allowing other people and things to life your life through their influence on you).

Values - Are your actions and words inline with the things you value? Going against or ignoring the things which mean most to you will always have negative consequences.

Self Awareness - Do you know who YOU are? Why you are doing the things you do OR what you want from life?

Empathy - Originally I had quality of relationships included in the list. However, if you don’t have empathy you can’t care for, love and serve others. And this is one of the founding principles in a lasting relationship.

Forward Thinking - From the beginning of life we all dream about what we want to be. Whether it be a doctor, fireman or to play one on TV we have goals very early on in life. Unfortunately, we are rarely taught how to develop those dreams into a direction for our lives. As a result we live in the moment instead of thinking with the end results in mind.

Emotional Intelligence - For most people the easy way out is to let our emotions reign but this reactive nature means the people who trigger the response are in control of your life.

These are an example of the things I will be focusing on in 2008. This isn’t a complete list but is a great place to start.

Here’s to making 2008 our best year yet!
