They Want a Hole

You Are Mistakenly Peddling Drills
“Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill. They wanted a hole.
Therefore, if you want to sell drills, you should advertise information about making holes – NOT information about drills!” - Perry Marshall
I remember the first time Tom stated this very revealing quote to me. Like most people, I laughed. Not because I didn’t get the point but because its so simple and honestly the idea of people wanting holes is a little silly–but true at the same time!
As marketers we often get caught up in our opportunities, companies, compensation plans, fast money and great products. We go after the masses with a fervent attitude proclaiming the merits of these things never giving a second thought to what the person really wants.
I’m hear to tell you: They don’t care.
They don’t want to hear about how fantastic your company, monetary potential and especially how excited you are about these things.
They want a hole: They want the end result.
People are not born with the desire become network marketers.
They don’t wake up one day with a bright flashing light bulb over their head, saying, “I wanna be a network marketer and sell travel!”
It doesn’t work that way.
Find The Holes
Getting into the mindset of your audience is truly a matter of asking…
Ask them questions. Let me give you an example. I recently put this into practice on one of my lead capture pages. They visitor comes to my website greeted by content, opt-in form and 4 questions:
What brought you here today?
Do you want to start a home based business?
Do you want to purchase product or make money?
What do you like/dislike about network marketing?
These questions allow me to enter into a conversation with them tailored to their needs–allowing me and my team to serve them better.
Secondly, simply care about them. Now when talking to them you can ask them questions which will have meaning to them. Get to know them and give them the answers they need. If they are interested in your product, show them the way to the product.
If they are interested in the business take the time to learn more about them. Help them by giving them the information they need to determine if it is the right time for them. After all its about them and not your commissions.
What do they want from life?
Do they have problems you can help them resolve?
Asking questions like these will help you get to the heart of the matter. Leave the hype behind and put your passion into finding out if you can help with the means to their end result.

Excellent blog. Good job. Very informational. How to win at guilt-free network marketing: Burn your names list, ditch the Thursday night hotel Ra-Ra meetings and NEVER pay for another worthless opportunity lead again!
