There is no reason not to follow your heart

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve
ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because
almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of
embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of
death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are
going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you
have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not
to follow your heart.
This is a small excerpt from a commencement speech, spoken by Mister Apple himself, Steve Jobs. The first time that I saw the audio video of this speech was months ago but his words are very strong and ring true in many ways.
We as insecure human beings can come up with so many reasons not to do what our hearts call us to do but the simple truth is that the clock is ticking. As Steve says, we are already naked, so what have you got to lose? Give it a shot.
Not listening to your heart is the surest way to secure the opposite of your dreams.
Listen, reach for them and know that happiness is in the journey.

This is so true! Taking risks and reaching for our dreams is an exhilerating and awesome part of this journey called life! When I am faced with a decision about whether to take a risk - I sort of have a test - I pretend that I am at the end of my life and I ask myself if I would regret not taking the risk. If the answer is yes, I take the risk no matter how scary! Even if I risk and it doesn’t work at least I know I tried.

Kristen - I agree with you but find that many people fear failure but don’t realize that in not making the attempt they’ve already failed at something much bigger than that one thing. The test that you mention is a great way to start an internal conversation with yourself and come to those important decisions–do I or don’t I?
