The Crap-O-Meter
Filed under: inspiration, motivation, quotes, self realization, personal growth
Have you ever seen a movie where they show the ships radar screen? The principle on which radar operates is simple. It sends out a short pulse of radio energy and receives a portion of the same energy reflected back by objects in its path.
Radar has been used in aiding ships to locate planes as well as surface craft, control ship gun fire, defend coastlines, give long-range warning, and many more finely detailed tasks. In fact, radar is useful in almost any military situation but it has its limitations.
Radar has several inherent limitations: it cannot “see” under water, for example, nor very far beyond the line of sight. Its range is affected to some extent by atmospheric conditions. Radar sometimes records signals from clouds, which to an inexperienced operator resemble signals from aircraft or ships.
Everyone Has A Radar - The Crap-O-Meter
I’m willing to bet you can already see where I’m going with this one but bear with me. I think this subject holds a great deal of importance when it comes to a self directed life.
Above we looked at the fact that the U.S. Military can use a radar to do many things. Our radar, which I call the Crap-O-Meter, is very much like the militaries. Each of us has one and this radar is a defense mechanism letting us know if something good or bad.
Some call it ‘having a gut feeling’ or ‘intuition’.
In generally its good to be notified of the negatives and positives coming and going from our lives but there is a problem with that system. Yes, our radar has flaws too.
To find the flaw we’ll go back to the description of the radar above. It consists of sending out a short pulse of radio energy and receiving a portion of the same energy reflected back by objects in its path. Our radar sense out and receives energy impulses but therein likes the problem.
What Kind of Energy Are You Sending Out?
Your radar is a kind of filter but the scope of that filter is limited to the energy you put into it. If you see the world as unforgiving, and believe that life is an unending grind–your radar will pick up only those things. Based on experiences, old and new hurts and living life we develop this filter and we automatically use.
See the problem? Due to undirected and passionless living our radar gets clouded just like the military radar causing us to see things which aren’t really there.
Reprogramming Your Crap-O-Meter
In the beginning this will mean learning the skill of discernment and being willing to turn the radar off. By turning it off and truly taking a look at circumstances from other angles you begin to see things from a different perspective. Doing so will open yourself up to greater opportunities and passions but you have to be willing to take the risk of turning it off.
After all, turning it off means being willing to admit your previously held beliefs might be wrong.
