The Artisan
My appreciation for art and Freshman year I would discover comics. It would also be the year I would began having dreams of being an entrepreneur. However, art had become a labor of love and expression for me. Every semester I took at least one art class and when the required courses were done I explored ‘Independent Study’ classes. These classes allowed me the freedom to explore any topic or medium I wanted too.
No assignments.
I turned in my works and the teacher would grade them and express an opinion.
Comic book characters were often the subject of my projects and freehand drawing was my medium of choice. For awhile I even entertained the idea of becoming a comic book artist and/or inker but quickly talked myself out of it. While I would have enjoyed the work, my heart was not in that type of work and I wanted a career I could explore, learn and continue be challenged by it.
Don’t we all?
When a cousin first introduced me to the world of comics I started out as a pretty casual reader. I read some of the more popular comics of the time such as X-Men, and Batman. Then when Image, a company created by comic artists, popped up I began reading books such as Spawn, Pitt, Cyberforce and the WildCats and a variety of others. The latter two were my favorite books. However, each of these books all revolved around superhuman abilities (
A shift in interests lead me to discover a title called Sandman, written by a fantastic author, Neil Gaiman. Everything about this particular book tickled my fancy. The theme was aimed at a mature readership and the art was phenomenal. I enjoyed it all and looked forward to each new issue.
Now, years after the Sandman title ended I still follow Neil and read his work. Last year (2006) would bring Sandman Absolute
. Absolute is a reprinting of the series in leather hard-bound collections of 20+ issues each. The artwork and storytelling have been left untouched but the coloring has been remastered with mondern technology allowing them to retell the story the way it was intended, in vivid color.
Thumbs up, Neil!
Clearly, I am still a Sandman enthusiast. These days I only collect a few books. As I said before, I collect Neil’s work as well as a comic series called JSA. Ironically it’s in the superhuman genre.
Throughout these years my artistic talents would command much of my focus but there was one trend also taking shape throughout these years.
A love for computers and the internet.
