Quotes Worth Repeating: Steve Miller, Tom Davis and Stephen Covey

“We’re trying to be responsible and at the same time proactive” - Steve Miller

Proactive, originally uploaded by Jonathan Assink.

“There was a profound failure to be proactive, a deep inability to execute” - Tom Davis

“If you’re proactive, you don’t have to wait for circumstances or other people to create perspective expanding experiences. You can consciously create your own.” - Stephen R. Covey

Rosa inspired me for this particular post with her posting of quotes regarding Humility. Being proactive is a subject which has been on my mind lately.

In fact, I’m working on this very subject but just had to share some of the better quotes I’ve come across in my search for the right ones.

[Note: I came across a great example of being proactive and wanted to mention it. The photo was used to participate in a project for Diabetes]

  1. Tim, I’ve left you a website link that goes to something I had written a while back on Talking Story: Be Proactive; Values by Choice as Your Habit.

I will forever connect proactivity to Stephen R. Covey and his first habit, for I am quite sure that I never used the word before then (and it still isn’t in most dictionaries!) Initially I loved the connection to self-determination as the “new paradigm” Covey wanted this habit to generate for us as opposed to the conventional and more universal principles of responsibility and initiative.

As the years have gone by however, I now more appreciate what Covey says about the combination of his first three habits as “make and keep promises” for that represents to me the Hawaiian value of Ho‘ohiki, and the notion that you take the leap involved with making some big promises that you will be challenged to keep, therefore discovering an abundance you may not have previously been aware even existed.

So therefore, the quote I would offer you would be this one:

“Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is.” ~ H. Jackson Brown

  2. Thanks for sharing that Rosa, I’ll definitely be digging into that link to see what you have to say.

Covey and his book, 7 Habits have had a really profound affect on me and I expect that the experiences of my coming years will distill and clarify it for me as well.
