Marketing Tip #3: Stop Swimming Against the Current and Find Your Genius

Swimming against the current is a losing battle.

Yet we are trained to think we need to do exactly that.

In all of history I can think of only one instance where swimming against the current came into play and unless you’re a salmon–you need not apply.

From the time we are born we are taught to become a ‘well-rounded’ individuals. Growing up I struggled with certain subjects and my teachers always badgered me about it.

Tim needs to improve his math skills.

The problem is, being ‘well-rounded’ is a myth in business.

Especially in the marketing of your business.

Neither you nor your product can be all things to all people.

It is about your personal genius, your story.

And the fact that you are ignoring it!!

You have God given areas you excel in. Why focus on the areas of weakness?

If you excel in communications and relationships. Use it.

If you can dominate markets through SEO. Do it!

My strong recommendation is to never set aside your strong points to focus on the weak.

In the beginning Tom kept telling me to pick up the phone and call leads. The problem is, cold calling and striking up a conversation with complete strangers isn’t my strong point.

Internet marketing and Search Engine Optimization is.

All it took was a blog, and two hours mentoring in the art of dominating the search engines for me to discover MY genius.

Lead with your strengths. Once you have demonstrated your unique perspective, even dominated the market within that area you can begin to hone more skills.

I’ve found my genius.

How can I help you stop swimming against the current AND find your genius?

  1. I admire your strength and courage. Thirty years ago I was first introduced to the art of marketing. I sold telephone systems for the telephone company. Much to my surprise, (I’ve always been shy.) I was pretty good it.

About the same time, I was introduced to multi level marketing. I wasn’t so good at it.

It took a long time for me to learn and appreciate what you have already grasped. The reason I failed in multi level marketing was that I was fighting a battle with someone else’s armor.

In short, as you discovered, cold calling is not your strength or interest. The internet is.

Like you, I’ve determined that God has made me the way I am. And along with that He has given me a profound apppreciation for multi level marketing.

Ergo, I’m going to do this thing my way. When I look at the break throughs in this industry, they were made by people being individually creative and not through mindless duplication.

Be encouraged. There’s a reason for your dream, and for the way you do things. Nobody can beat you being you.

  2. Thanks for the words of support. My hope is the lessons I’ve learned will help others to see their way through the ups and downs.

    God bless.
