Fast and Furious, The Drift Test and You

You’re judged by the company you keep.
There is some truth to that but… I prefer to look at it in a different way.
You can also get a sense of self by looking at the people with whom you surround yourself.
A scene in a movie, Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, does well to bring this to light.
Here is how the scene plays out:
[Shawn and Han are talking about their friendship midway through the movie. They are overlooking a busy intersection in Tokyo, crowded with hundreds of people.]
Shawn: Why’d you let me race with your car? You knew I was gonna wreck it.
Han: Why not?
Shawn: Cause its a lot of money.
Han: I have money. It’s trust and character I need around me. Who you choose to be around you lets you know who you are. One car in exchange for knowing what a man is made of–that’s a price I can live with.
Han understands two things. First, he recognizes the affect the people you surround yourself with have on you as a person. Secondly, he chooses to surround himself with only those who will effect quality in his life.
Seeing the movie caused me to come up with what I call the Drift Test.
As I get to know people I look for the kinds of qualities I value and/or see in myself. Then as I begin to invest in the new relationship I pay attention to whether we are attuned or not. If our values and the connecting between us are inline they will not drift away nor will they abuse the relationship.
There is some risk involved with letting people in.
Sometimes they are not who they appear to be.
Sometimes you might crash and burn, just like Shawn did with Han’s car in the movie but the risk is worth it.
I am what James Ray would consider a high touch person. I invest a great much into the people I bring into my life.
I love on them.
Reach out to them.
Lend my ear when they need it.
Sometimes that means I get hurt. Actually, that means I get hurt a lot. Both on a personal level as well as people who have exploited it for their ends.
These things can and will happen in your business.
But this is ok.
By knowing the principles and characteristics you value, you create a kind of buffer because you have a map for the people and things you want in your life.

Right on Tim. I think I would add that as children we often do not get to pick (or know that we should pick) who is around us and we develop a habit of associating with toxic individuals because it feels normal not because they make us feel good.
