Entitlement Mentality and You

“This entitlement mentality is a monster problem” - Donald Trump

A nasty habit has been developing and taking hold of our society, something I like to refer to it as the entitlement mentality. Entitlement is a guarantee of access to benefits because of rights, or by agreement through law. Its also thought of the belief that one deserves given benefits or rewards. More often than not entitlement is considered in a negative light unless its used in the case of lawful judgments.

We saw the rise of this way of thinking as Corporate America became bigger and bigger business. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not placing blame on the government or the companies. There was a time in our history when companies took very good care of their employees but as times get harder and more demanding companies aren’t able to do so. The problem is everybody still expects their employer to take care of them and ensure their future, even when they know the future is uncertain for everyone.

It was always in the hands of the individual to take care of themselves but at some point we began thinking that someone else was going to take care of us. This is a fatal mistake. Nobody is guaranteed anything in today’s world.

People set themselves up for a fall when they adopt this belief because they aren’t taking responsibility for their own actions. Instead of taking steps to insure their financial and emotional future they expect someone else to do it for them. You’ve probably heard it yourself.

I can’t believe this company. They are a multi-million dollar corporation and they can’t provide more and take care of their employees. We deserve more.

I have done so much for this company, -I deserve- better.

Sound familiar?

This isn’t the only example, it can happen on a larger scale in the shape of a mindset a company as a whole has developed. It also shows up on the web. Businesses and individuals working hard to start a business on the internet can easily fall pray to the feeling of being entitled to what the had and then lost.

Hundreds if not thousands of new businesses go online each and every day. They work to build up an audience through available means of advertising both online and off. Once they develop a handsome amount of traffic a sense of entitlement and complacency sets in.

Businesses who have websites online get used to the traffic Google sends them for being a part of a trend, controversy or just having great marketing skills. After awhile they just expect it. Google will continue to send them all the traffic they need to keep on trucking, right?

Wrong.

Google, and all the other search engines continually refine their algorithms and this can spell doom for a business whose sole source of traffic and income is organic search engine results. Being on the first page for the right keywords can generate incredible amounts of traffic but what if your website falls to page 3, 4 or worse? You go from being on cloud 9 to hitting ground zero–hard.

Assuming the object of your desires and livelihood will always be there OR that you deserve more just because they are available now is incredibly dangerous in times when financial and emotional stability are involved. Not to mention your inner peace of mind when the walls come crashing down.

The best practice I can recommend for avoiding the ‘entitlement’ way of thinking is to simply stand up and take responsibility for yourself and your well being. God didn’t give you two arms, legs and a complex brain to let them rot. Stop expecting your employer to cover your backside because in today’s world, it just isn’t going to happen. Companies have expenses and responsibilities which causes them to look after their own livelihood–you should do the same.

If you own a business and you are relying on one source of income or in the case of the internet, traffic, start looking for other sources for these things. Keeping all your eggs in one basket and banking on it just because the honey in the pot is sweet at the given moment is a dangerous gamble. Don’t be a victim.

Don’t let the mentality monster get you!
