Decision Making: You Decide What to FOCUS On

The people, places, events and feelings you focus on are one of the first three things you have control of in your life. We’ll talk about the values and taking action in the coming days but for now I’d like to talk about focus.

Focus is defined as ‘directed attention’ OR in the verbal sense ‘to concentrate attention or effort’. You decide where to direct your attention. Without a conscious decision to concentrate on any given thing–you would flit from one thought to the next, one project to the next, one goal to the next, and so on.

Let me repeat the subtitle one more time.

You decide what to focus on.

Its absolutely paramount (as well as my own) for you to understand this concept in the decision making process.

Stop and think for a moment. What are some of the things you’ve always wanted to do, be or see in your lifetime?

How much time have you devoted to them? Thought about them? Reveled in how it would feel to accomplish those things?

Got your answer? If you think about, imagine, and plan for these things you have taken the first step towards seeing them through as well as committing to your decisions. If you don’t focus on those things take a moment to reflect on what you DO think about.

Most people will find they think about the exact opposite of the things they want to see in their life. For example, for the longest time I wanted to create change in my life but I remained focused on the fact that I felt stuck.

I felt stuck because I was stuck. Stuck in a way of thinking which kept me in that position. By shifting my thoughts away from being stuck to the pursuit of fun, fortune and peace of mind I focused on my passions. By focusing on my passions I was able to visualize them coming into my life.

When you chose to focus on the negatives or indulge in those things you don’t want you are actually giving them the priority. It makes sense doesn’t it? If you’re feeling low you aren’t exactly going to be in the frame of mind to go out and build a business or met the girl of your dreams, are you?

Final Thought On Focus

Gary Ryan Blair aka “The Goals Guy” has a great way of looking at what it means to focus. He says

Follow One Course Until Successful.

By now you should have a pretty clear understanding of why focus is so important to the overall direction of your life. Gary’s statement takes it a step further.

You’ve made the decision and by making that decision, then following that particular path until you’ve become successful in it, you have cut yourself off from all other possibilities. Focus is about seeing things through to the end.

Congratulations.

You’re well on your way to making true decisions. Decisions you have control over and are aimed in the direction you want your life to go.
