Conversation on fear of failure

“Fear is false expectations appearing real.”
A couple days ago while going through the list of blogs that I like to peruse in the morning hours of my day I came across two posts that really caught my eye. Both of them were on the same subject, fear. The posts belong to Phil Gerbyshak who posted on Collective Genius and the second is actually a podcast on the NoBullshitLeadership blog. Check them out, they both have great content that will cause you to think. Phil’s post is pertaining to personal fear of failure, and the podcast addresses the fears one can face in business (Waay back in May I also touched on the subject of fear in my post about defeating the storytellers).
I have brought it to the fore again because no matter who I talk to or how much time passes I’m always hearing from people that are held back by thier fears. Some of them are crippled with bitter resentment because they allowed those fears to shape them and their lives, keeping them from realizing their goals. Don’t be one of those people that listens to that voice within that whispers the seeds of doubt. Listen to your heart and it will lead you steadfast in the direction that is best for your life.
The voice that I’m speaking of is often refered to your ego, a gut feeling or thinking with your head. I am making that connection because there is a really serious flaw in the plan of someone that lives according to that voice. The problem is that (I’ll refer to the above as a gut feeling from now on) if you follow your gut feeling or instinct you are actually leading with all of the biases and misconceptions that you’ve learned throughout life. For example, you may keep everyone, including your beloved family, at a distance because of the hurts from the past. In this case, your gut feeling is to protect yourself by not letting them in. The story that your fear is telling you is greater then the voice of your heart. This is hard on everyone around you that loves you, but its critical that you realize this because only you can change the way that you approach fear. Learning to listen to the voice of your heart, which is a direct path to your soul, and not the voices of reason that come from experiences in life is a skill that can be learned. Unfortunately, I can’t go into great detail here today, but if you would like to hear more on this subject please let me know. I would be happy to continue talking with you about it.
To bring things to a close I’ll name a couple of my own fears, as Phil did and then talk about the lesson that I’ve neared as a result of them.
For instance…
Like Phil, I could have been more focused while I was in college and completed the program I began, as a Commercial Artist. But because of fear I veered from that course and haven’t returned to school since that time.
I could have been a successful web designer in a CA start up as well as starting my own CGI design business but I feared the consequences of the risk at a time that I was still adjusting to my new home in Oakland. The result? I wound up back in Minnesota having lost sight of dreams.
The takeaway?
I don’t feel regret concerning these things in my life because they each have have done thier part to shape me into the person that I am. The value is that I have learned my lessons and I can either make the choice to leverage my the knowledge from the past, or give way to fear. These are the days that I redefine who Tim Draayer is because as Phil says, How do I live now? I TAKE THE SHOT!
If that wouldn’t be the case I wouldn’t have come to know XELR8 or YTB, and I wouldn’t be building my own business. Not only that I wouldn’t have met and been able to surround myself with great people like Phil Gerbyshak and Mike Sansone.
Life isn’t meant to be viewed from inside the box.
To a better life!
Tim

Great article Tim! I am glad you overcame your fears and became YOU! That’s a pretty amazing thing to be, when you think about it. Just BE YOU. Nothing more, nothing less. That’s all you need to do, and all you need to be.

Phil - Thank you, I’ve experienced no other way to truly BE happy than to just allow yourself to be who you are. Negative emotions like fear can’t survive in a person who is filled with harmony.
