What Personal Injury Taught Me About Being Attentive to My Team

I’m always amazed by bad things have to get before people stand up and take notice of themselves but just as important–other people.
Yesterday proved to be a strangely fruitful day. Despite a 2 hour stay in emergency care I learned some things about people and got to know someone I work with a little better.
I won’t go into the gory details but suffice to say that I wound up nearly breaking my nose and having cuts on my forehead and nose. As a result I spent nearly two hours in emergency care and had time to talk with the Manager who assisted me in the process.
While I was there I had time to talk with him but the actual lesson I would extract from all of this would come after I returned to the store. For the next 6 hours every manager in the store would find some reason to come back and check on me.
How are you feeling, Tim?
Of course this is only natural and it shows they are being attentive. A good thing.
At one such interaction I told the inquiring manager that I was doing good. He responded by looking at me and saying, “Are you sure? You look a little…”
I interupted him and said, “Tired?”
He nodded in the affirmative and I kinda grinned at him. I said, “There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not exhausted by this time of the night.” I looked over at the group we had working and continued, “We work extremely hard, doing physical labor. We’re always ‘tired’.”
He just nodded and went on to check on the number of other issues awaiting his attention.
However, that conversation taught me something. I realized not everyone is as in tune with people’s feelings as I tend to be (It comes along with being an introvert). It took me getting injured for management to even see how fatigued our team is–me in particular.
The Take Away?
It’s absolutely essential in a networking home-based business to be attentive to the people beneath you. Be aware of their needs and see to it that they have the information and training they need to survive. They are your team, your business family and without them the networking side of your business will grow stale.
This is where you could make use of a form of something like the Daily 5 Minutes.
